When i was making my list of Cronenburg movies, i was intrigued by the few short films he had made throughout the years. since they were all fairly short, i decided to watch em all in one sitting. so here,s what a total noob thought of Cronenburg's short films.
also im not going to be rating them on any kind of scale because... well frankly i didn't fully understand all of them
TRANSFER
A gay couple yell at each other in the snow. honestly, i had zero clue what this was when i finished watching it. its an intriguing mini mystery i will have to revisit a few times before i can make any sense of it. without checking the you-tube comments
FROM THE DRAIN
This one makes a bit more sense metaphorically, but is still wonderfully confusing. it gives you ideas to latch on to, but very little of what you are seeing is meant to be taken literally. its about fear, and this is just as much about what you see as what you don't.
its not as obvious as lynch instant talent with short films, but you can tell David is getting the hang of it.
CAMERA
I Love this one. its perfectly uncomfortable, thought provoking, disturbing, and strangely beautiful. its a short film about film itself, and the trans-formative power of recording an event. if you watch any one of these shorts yourself, i simply demand you watch this one.
THE DEATH OF DAVID CRONENBURG
That was easily the most emotional 57 seconds i have ever seen. its disturbing, heart breaking, and beautifully hopeful all at the same time. I almost teared up.
CRIMES OF THE FUTURE
This is the first segment that really feels like the Cronenburg we all know and love. Medical and surreal body horror that isn't trying so hard to be completely metaphorical. there is still plenty of metaphor to go around, but this is easily the most accessible of all the short i have seen from him so far.
