Every school I have ever attended has there own punching bag. The earliest example I can remember was a girl named Natalie. She was overweight, didn’t have many social skills, and was always the but of the joke. Later In middle school there was Brittany She had massive coke bottle glasses, suffered from acne, and had an overbite which caused her to lisp. Despite their differences, both were the laughingstock of the school. With the internet, this punching bag idea that exists in all schools suddenly was limitless. If there are large groups of people, these punching bags will keep existing. But why? Maybe giving the bullied kids someone to bully makes them feel empowered. Maybe the world is just full of cruel people who enjoy hurting others. Maybe we simply don’t understand the obstacles said punching bag had to go through and may still be going through. Whatever motivates it, there is no better case study for this type of behavior than Chris Chan
For a while it’s easy to laugh at him, and I couldn’t help but laugh a bit during the first part or 2 of this series. You know going that he committed crimes, so it feels a little bit safer to laugh at him. But as this series goes on, he becomes more and more sympathetic. He is an autistic man who simply doesn’t have a lot of social skills. On top of that he is stuck with his unwell parents, and a massive online community whose sole purpose is to mock him. We often hear this mocking of him directly, and it makes this Doc a brutal watch. They manipulate him about how the world works, and he genuinely can’t learn from his mistakes. He is clearly in agony, and the only response he seems to get is laughter.
As much as this Doc series is about Chris, its also about us. People on the internet who feel like they can anonymously shit on whoever they want with no consequences. people who leave hate comments because they think its funny. And most importantly, how that can effect someone who isn't able to distinguish the fake troll created reality from the real world. If you plan on starting this massive YouTube deep dive to learn about the crimes Chris Chan is accused of, you will eave disappointed. at no point in time this series dive into the allegations against him, the court case for those allegations.
and just like this massive series, I don't really have an ending for this one. just ya know... try not to be a dick ok? some people genuinely don't know any better than to believe you.
