CARNE

i was re-watching Gaspar Noé's IRREVERSIBLE, and even after re-watching it i still had one question. Who the hell is the naked old dude who starts the movie with his bunkmate? after a quick google, i learned he was a character in his first feature film, I STAND ALONE. After yet another google search, i learned I STAND ALONE is actually a sequel to a short film called CARNE.

Oh yeah also in France they eat horses still. trust me its relevant.

After the birth of his baby daughter Cynthia, a Parisian horse butcher soon finds himself abandoned, responsible to raise and care for his newborn girl, completely on his own. Moreover, as his little girl grows into an adolescent, nothing much seems to change in the butcher's life, who day in, day out, experiences the same numbing and tedious repetition, up until Cynthia's first signs of puberty. Under those circumstances and after a dreadful incident coupled with an ungovernable paroxysm of violence, the butcher will fall into a downward spiral that will burn to the ground whatever dignity still remained in him.

this movie(?) opens like a PETA pop up add. one real life horse butchering later, and we are fully in this movie. I often talk about how much i love David Lynch, and i have to say i love Gaspar Noé just as much. if your not to distracted by this movies extreme violence, every second of this movie is beautiful. Lynch talks about creating a moving painting with cinema, and this is the closest a movie have ever fit that description for me. The continuing color pallet, the Wes Anderson beautiful symmetry, everything about this movies directing feels like a crazy dark fairy tale.

with a run time of 38 minutes (less than that considering the credits) this is a wonderful display of talented directing, and an equally disturbing tale of dark violence and hopelessness.

my kinda jam for sure
