Bullet Train is a 2022 American action comedy film directed by David Leitch from a screenplay by Zak Olkewicz. It is based on the 2010 novel Maria Beetle by Kōtarō Isaka.
Ladybug is an unlucky assassin who's determined to do his job peacefully after one too many gigs has gone off the rails. Fate, however, may have other plans as his latest mission puts him on a collision course with lethal adversaries from around the globe -- all with connected yet conflicting objectives -- on the world's fastest train.
i had no idea this movie was based on a novel until after i watched it, and that might make this the sing worst novel adaptation. The jokes never land, The characters are mostly all forgettable, and damn near every character in this movie feels horribly miscast. David Inoue, Executive Director of the Japanese American Citizens League, criticized the casting, explaining that while American actors would have been appropriate if the setting was changed to the United States, the filmmakers used the novel's Japanese setting while keeping Japanese characters in the film's background, strengthening charges of whitewashing.
Really the worst part of this movie is just how good it could have been. This movie is basically just a piece of junk food you snack on and forget about asap, but in the right hands this movie could have been a lot more. David Leitch fills this movie with a great Edgar Right/Tarantino energy that's a lot of fun, and i would love to see all of that in service of something greater than a failed summer blockbuster. The dude who made DEADPOOL 2 and JOHN WICK clearly knows how to shoot a action movie that's more colorful than a box of crayons, but the characters are all so one note and cliché you can literally kill them after only having one scene and nobody really minds.
This movie feels like a parody of classic action and samurai films more than somebody's passion project, and i really hope David Leitch has more up his sleeve for his next movie.
Its harmless fun if you're into that kind of thing/10
