More movies need to start with a monologue from the devil himself. even if he is a proper British fancy boy.
If you are like me, your a frequent user of the fire place/yule logs available all over the place. SHUDDERS ghoul log, Netflix fireplace for your home, hell i will even use the Disney plus Frozen yule log. of course the Halloween ones are always my favorite, so when i bought my new Roku TV and saw a channel called AMERICAN HORRORS i had to check it out. Turns out instead of a ghoul log, AMERICAN HORRORS is a 24/7 live-stream of old horror movies and horror movie trailers. i'm always eager for horror movie recommendations, and when i saw this movies trailer for the first time last night i knew i had to watch this movie ASAP.
encase you couldn't tell by the BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW style opening that leads straight into some sweet ass funk music, this movie is everything i wanted it to be. perhaps its because i have been spending so much time in the early 2000s with the HELLRAISER series, but watching a movie from the 70's feels like coming home. the bright color pallet, the the way everyone's lines are dubbed over, and the way the Italians try so hard to convince you this movie is American all work to create the perfectly cheesy feeling all 70's horror movies share. i am a lover of all things horror, but the 70's and 80's really had a unique magic that is almost impossible to put into words.
a lot of what make this movie work as well as it does is the strength of its characters. Much like POLTERGEIST, This movie starts strong with one of the most believable families i have seen in a while. the whole cast has excellent chemistry, and the normalcy of there lives makes the later horror to come as effective as possible. instead of any exterior force attacking this family, the threat comes from inside the mother as she struggles with her devil fetus, and eventually becoming full blown possessed.
the 2 hour run time makes everything feel like it drags on a bit longer (ok more than a bit) than it should, but overall this movie is just wacky and spooky enough to become one of my new favorites.
9/10
