I'm starting to think that Nana and Pops might not be in a goth book club after all....
This movie's setup is instantly intriguing. an elderly couple is having some lunch like any other day when the husband steps outside to grab the pregnant women he has kidnapped and brings her inside. and based on that setup, you may think this movie will follow the kidnapping victim as she tries to escape right? but this movie is a lot more on its mind than recreating that simple old horror formula. a more accurate description for this movie would be as follows.
after an elderly couple performs a ritual to bring their grandson back from the dead, they are plagued by hellish visions from their past.
this movie tries to pull off a few tricky things, and all of them work quite well for me. its plot is told largely through flashbacks, without ever getting to SAW levels of confusion. this movie is also juggling 2 plots at the same time, but the 2 stories fit quite nicely together and are well-paced to keep this movie tense. and those hellish visions I mentioned earlier are incredible displays of practical effects, and this movie has some truly nasty kills.
it's not always easy to make ghosts feel really frightening, but this movie does it with ease.
