This is my 420th review, and instead of doing some garbage ass weed themed horror movie i wanted to do something i have been meaning to do for a long time now. Back when i watched movie trailers, this one instantly caught my eye. it was wonderfully vague and left me to guess at exactly what kind of movie this is, and I thought it was an A24 film based on all of the gorgeous directing alone. when i finally say this in theatres i couldn't and didn't take notes, so to review this movie properly lets give it a re-watch and see if it holds up for me.
Antlers is a 2021 supernatural horror film directed by Scott Cooper. In a small town in central Oregon, Frank Weaver runs a meth lab out of an abandoned mine. While his young son Aiden waits outside the mine in his truck, Frank and an accomplice are attacked by an unseen creature. Investigating strange noises, Aiden is also attacked by the creature. Frank and Aiden survive their encounter with the creature and return home, where their condition quickly worsens. Frank sets up a locked room and demands that no matter what, Aiden's older brother Lucas keeps them locked inside.
this movie opens In the small town of Cispus Falls in central Oregon, where Frank Weaver runs a meth lab out of an inactive mine. While his 7-year-old son Aiden waits outside in his truck, Frank and an accomplice are attacked by an unseen creature in a beautifully directed scene of claustrophobic horror. as a matter of fact every scene in this movie is beautifully shot, even with the otherwise mundane and often ugly setting. one of the first things that struck me about that this movie is how nostalgic it made me for my own childhood, which makes sense considering Antlers was shot in the town of Hope, British Columbia. a lot of where i grew up looks exactly like this movie, and even the young boy roaming this dead end town feels close to home for me. this movie does a lot of color correcting to make the setting a lot worse than it is IRL, but this movies layer or grime color pallet works quite well for this movie, and did i mention how god damn beautiful the directing is yet?
There are a lot of strong characters worth mentioning such as Keri Russell as reformed alcoholic and school teacher Julia Meadows, Jesse Plemons of breaking bad fame as a friendly small town cop Paul Meadows. I'm a big fan of the tension in there relationship, and its a damn good lesson on how to make character conflict without falling back on cheap stereotypes. I Love a movie that can introduce its characters personal life and struggles without some kind of exposition dumps, and this movie nails it. the whole damn movie is darkly beautiful perfection, but its obvious the real star of this show is Jeremy T. Thomas as 12-year-old Lucas Weaver, Frank’s eldest son and Aiden’s older brother, who spends his time roaming the town, collecting roadkill and killing small animals before taking them home.
Jeremy celebrates his birthday on July 3rd, and He turns 15 years old as of 2022. He is best known for his roles in Antlers, Paradise Lost, The Righteous Gemstones from Harmon Freeman, and many more. I'm actually quite happy i could barely find any info on him, and i hope he has an equally strong career ahead of him.
Its quite literally a movie about a parent you love turning into a creature of pure addiction and violence while still being your parent, and that's something i can totally relate to.
