as soon as you see a confederate flag, you know its going to be a real hard movie to watch. would love to have everyone who waves the confederate flag to watch this once a day for the rest of there lives.
a dark look at what happened in southern slave plantations, and how similar attitudes still persist today. lots of brutal scenes of every type of abuse on the table. its showing people up against seemingly impossible odds, and the whole movie is filled with a sickening tension. for those who have experienced any kind of abuse, this movie will hit you extra hard. this movie is gut wrenching, and by far the darkest movie i have ever seen.
that being said, the movie is beautifully shot and directed. the acting is amazing , and its a large part of why the movie is so effective.
an then bam. its modern day. or maybe it always was.
40 minutes in we are suddenly in 2020. and we see a happy black family talking to there daughter about why people are so angry. it feels like the director is explaining it to white people like there are children. and surprisingly, it works for me. white people suck, and they refuse to acknowledge it. night as well treating them like kids, cause lord knows we need it. we get some modern day racist assholes, then we head on back to the plantation, and my stomach lurches.
and thats basically the movie. back and forth between time periods, and white people were/ are racist, ignorant, and fearfully of what they dont understand. and also a good commentary on those assholes who dress up in civil war uniforms and play pretend. this whole movie definitely seems kinda plausible.
not terribly subtle, but incredibly effective.
