HOST

When i first saw this movie on shudder, i was curious enough to click on the poster to see what it was all about. i read the description and immediately dismissed this as an unfriended clone. then i watched Chris Stuckman's review, and thought i would give it a shot. at a short 57 minutes, i figured worst case scenario it would be over quickly.

This film is unique in the fact that it was shot, edited, and released all during quarantine. how you ask? the entire movie takes place over zoom. and of course for some reason whenever you have a movie that is shot like this, people compare it to unfriended. In my experience, people either love or hate the film, and eventually i will cover unfriended and talk about that idea more.

so when you dont compare HOST to any other films like it, what are you left with?

i really enjoy the length of this movie. its a strange sort of area where its to short to be a full length movie, but to long to be a short film. the advantage to that is that action starts fairly quickly, around 20 minutes in. the film is also filled with well acted characters that feel like real people, which is always welcome. as far as the "filming from a shitty webcam" directing, they do a fairly good job of making the film look like it was shot by kids with webcams. there are a few shots in the movie that looked very high quality, but not enough to be distracting.

OK so i got high, finished the movie, and am here to finish the review. so please enjoy the finale of the review in

ALL NEW STONER VISION

this movie kicks ass. part of why this movie really works for me is the pacing. normally in these type of movies everyone gets picked off one by one until only one is left. the same things happens here, except everyone is picked off basically at once. if you were expecting this to be that same length of a normal feature film, this is super jarring. once things start happening, there is barely any slow build up. people just start fucking dying. and boi oh boi do i love when people start dying. if you have an hour to kill and want a super fucking horror movie, yo have to watch this.

10/10
