"Sometimes, dead is better. sooooooo much fucking better than this crime against my eyeballs"
Eric N, on PET SEMETARY 2019
This is the first time I've seen this movie since it first came out and since I've read the novel, and boy oh boy do I have some complaints.
Almost every character in this movie is portrayed entirely wrong when compared to the original book. Ellie is a 13 year old playing an 8 year old who Is constantly doing the dumbest shit possible, Louis Creed is just as bad as Dale Midkiff and always feels like a bad actor, Racheal Creed is just a cardboard standard female character, Fred Gwynne is absolutely irreplaceable as Judd, and about the only characters this movie does get right are Gage and church. the modern setting also destroys all of this movies '90s charm, and completely interferes with all of Judd's original stories from the book timeline wise.
The script scrambles the pacing even more, and constantly feels like it's trying to hard to prove itself as a horror movie. The original book search is a story about a happy family moving to a small town, but this movie feels the need to assault you with its horror. All of my favorite parts of the novel weren't horror at all, It was the strength and realism of Stephen King's original characters.
Exactly like the carry remake, this movie feels like a middle school play version of one of my favorite books ever written, to completely fails to capture any of the tone and themes that make the original so effective.
dead is better/Dale Midkiff
