I was fairly uninterested in this movie, until i learned Angela Bettis is our leading lady. I worship at the throne of Angela Bettis. LEATHERFACE, CARRIE, MAY, Hell even ABC's Of Death was blessed with her screen presence, and if she is involved I'm always down.
12 Hour Shift is a black comedy horror film written and directed by Brea Grant and starring Angela Bettis, Kit Williamson, and David Arquette. It's 1999 and over the course of one 12 hour shift at an Arkansas hospital, a junkie nurse (Angela Bettis), her scheming cousin (Chloe Farnworth) and a group of black market organ-trading criminals start a heist that could lead to their imminent demises.
now you may be wondering why i put Arkansas in bold, and that's because this movie does to. I'm a sucker for a good accent, and this movie is full of the brim with amazing actors doing amazing Arkansas accents. it helps with the delightfully goofy tone of this movie, and the soundtrack only further emphasizes how this whole movie doesn't really take itself seriously. Shows like GREYS ANATOMY often show hospitals as constantly interesting action packed battlefields, and this movie is here to highlight just how mundane and boring hospitals are most of the time. another myth this movie busts is the idea most people have about positions of power like this. Police, Firefighters, Pilots, Doctors, we are quite literally putting our lives in there hands. you would places like this to be 100% professional and effective, but the reality is they are just as boring and prone to error as everyone else on the planet. the characters in this movie are constantly fucking up in a way that feels extremely human.
that being said, i have a hard time fulling gelling with this movies comedy. it makes a great first impression, but nothing really happens in the first half hour or so. the whole dumb blonde shtick gets old pretty quick, and if all the situational awkwardness doesn't make you giggle, there isn't much fun to be had around here.
so you wait.
then the church choir musical number makes you smile a bit.
then you keep waiting
with everyone talking about how good this movie is, i was curious to check it out. turns out not all humor is universal. the dumb blonde shtick gets old really quick
meh/10
