Talking about this movie honestly kinda pointless. there have been countless YouTube videos, documentaries, and reviews of this movie out there that writing another one seems pointless. anything i could say has already been said by someone much smarter than i. so i figured i would talk about my experience with the movie and Kubrick in general.
i dont remember what made me want to watch it, but when i was about 16 i watched 2001 for the first time. in a pitch black room in the basement of my parents house, i immediately fell in love with the movie. it scared me, and i had never seen anything like it. before the week was even over i made my dad take me down to HMV (now known as sunrise records for some reason) and i bought it on Blu-ray for 10 bucks and watched it again. it was in the special features section where i first saw Kubrick talk about his movies.
i honestly dont remember seeing this movie for the first time. I remember that same sense of stunned paralysis i had first felt watching 2001, but the movie had been sort of spoiled simply by its own popularity. even if you have never seen this movie before, you have seen a parody of scene of it somewhere. arguably, the shining is the most well known horror movie of all time, and its not hard to see why.
the score is immediately unsettling, the movies uses silence perfectly to create the feeling of isolation, the Yorgos Lanthimos style family dynamic is equally unsettling, and the dream like visuals are freaky as fuck. every actor in this movie gives it 10000%, and i do love the story of roger the dog man. please dear god i beg of you either read the book or just google roger the dog man.
