Frankenstein may be a decades old dead guy, but he still loves a good set of boobies. that's oddly inspirational.
OK OK i admit...maybe POSSUM was a bad pick for my Halloween review. so with only 34 minutes of Halloween night remaining, i figured i would cover my ass and talk about a far more fun and accessible horror movie. and what movie could possibly be more Halloween themed than THE MONSTER SQUAD.
the poster makes this movie out to be Goonies vs Classic horror monsters, and that is a perfectly accurate description of this movie. the main cast of kids are all surprisingly natural, and this movie never feels like kids trying to act. in fact, almost every character in this movie is just as strong as the child actors. they all have plenty of great comedic moments (when the family isn't collapsing), and the chemistry between the whole cast is cheesy 80s perfection. its very self aware of how crazy the concept is, and it lean in all the way towards ridiculous comedy and horror cliches.
and god damn to i love the way this movies shows its classic horror monsters. each of the moldy oldies get there own little intro scenes, and each one is fun as hell. this movie also has a surprisingly large budget, and is packed full with amazing practical effects. Stan Winston has always been right along side Tom Savini, so it makes sense the folks at the Stan Winston Studio did such an incredible job redesigning the classic monsters. the actors do a great job of capturing the original mannerisms of the creepy creatures, and i love just how out of place they look even in the 80s. there really isn't a single thing for me to complain about in this movie, and you can tell the team behind this movie loves horror movies just as much as we do.
this is an absolute must watch for any horror fan, or if you love Spielberg style kid centered adventure comedy.
just be grateful Franky didn't chuck any kids into a lake again.
