I damn near cheered when Jake Weber comes on screen. I have always loved him in the classic DAWN OF THE DEAD remake, and i have never seen him in another movie until now. God bless this special special boy and may i see again sometime soon
also i have to give a quick shout out to the way this movie shows the effects of weed. so many movies make it out to be a hallucinating kind of drug, and this movie shows it 100% accurately.
A young couple head to a beach house to spend some quality time and finds it peaceful when they don't encounter any neighbors around. Their quality time is interrupted by the arrival of unexpected guests and as if that wasn't bad enough, a mysterious fog along with a mysterious infection is slowly spreading around.
I knew i would like this movie before the 5 minute mark. Its so wonderfully mysterious while giving you just enough info to get an idea of what's going on, and this movies knows how to show not tell. Even if it was simply these to characters trying to mend a damaged relationship i would be hooked, but this movie is constantly suspenseful in so many small ways. A simple shot of a glass of wine feels like Hitchcock's bomb under the table, and i love the constant feeling of unease and mistrust throughout the whole movie.
you see a lot of Lovecraft remakes that miss the mark of capturing what makes Lovecraft so frightening in the first place, and this movie feels like a far more mature version of COLOR OUT OF SPACE. No wacky Tommy Chong side characters, No Nick Cage hanging out with his alpacas, no filler material whatsoever. Just extremely talented actors, a beyond talented director, and a crazy good concept executed in the best way possible.
This is a masterclass in how to make an incredible movie with a low budget and only one real setting.
10/10
