SWAMP THING (1982)

man we were really in the dark ages of superhero (?) movies in the 80s.

you will have a hard time finding anyone in favor of ads, but sometimes ads are worth looking into. i was thumbing through (virtually) an old copy of FANGORIA magazine and i saw an ad i couldn't ignore. the ad was for Chas Balun's "Connoisseur's Guide to Contemporary Horror Films", which is a lovely little book that essentially works as the horror TV guide of 1985. its full of movie recommendations, ratings, locations of video stores, and anything a horror nerd could ever want. i am going to use it quite a bit for future reviews, but i had to start this whole thing off with SWAMP THING

i have mixed feelings about this movie, but the plot is simple enough. While working on his project to create a new plant/animal species capable of thriving in extreme conditions, Dr. Alec Holland (Ray Fucking Wise!!) turns into a swamp plant monster that leads to a havoc.

to its credit, this movie has all the pieces of something really great. Adrienne Barbeau is a bad-ass as always, Reggie Batts is perfect as the comic relief, Ray Wise plays a Goldblum level flirt, and the swamp is a great setting for a horror movie. but this movie isn't a horror movie, and for ever thing that works well there's 3 things that don't. the titular SWAMP THING is obviously a guy in a rubber suit, the run time feels way to long, and its worst crime is being an action movie with no real sense of action. all of this movies action scenes use the same formula, and despite the large scale destruction it all feels cheap and amateur.

IMDBD gives this movie a 5.5/10, and i have to agree with them.

5.5/10
