unfortunately, things don't always go to plan. sometimes the copy of EYES WITHOUT A FACE wont sync the subtitles correctly, so you have to review NIGHT OF THE DEMONS instead. at least its one of the best (and worst) times for horror 1980... well 1988 but close enough.
also the trope of "i did some digging at the library and found out about this small town's dark past" sure is done a lot. maybe i should hang out at the library more...
plot wise, this movie is just as simple as all of its characters. A group of teens decides to have a Halloween party up at the deserted funeral parlor (of course they did) where they accidentally awaken some evil force (of course they did) and find themselves trapped, with no way out. and you will be glad to know that this movie is everything you hoped it would be. its full of horny teens, hilariously strange line delivery's, a big spooky old ex funeral parlor, copyright free rock music, embarrassingly amateur the worlds slowest falling mirror, evil dead style demon POV camera work, and of course lots of nasty practical effects. it captures the Halloween atmosphere perfectly, and even with all of its flaws its one fun as hell movie.
the movie has the nasty habit of lingering way to long with these bare minimum characters, but when it wants to spook you it goes balls to the wall to get the job done. all of the effects work on this movie is outstanding, and its a large part of what makes this movie hold up as well as it does. you get some hungry hungry nipples, a strange mirror monster, melting and burned hand flesh, 2 eyeballs bursting, a surprisingly feisty severed arm, and of course the various forms of possessed make up for quite a few characters.
Its definitely toned down from what Sam Raimi could have done with this script, but not by much.
it definitely feels slow at times, but those brief holy shit what the fuck gory moments keep me going.
