HOUSE 1986

just so we are clear, this is not HOUSE directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi in 1977, this is the Sean Cunningham American sleazy one. Also where on earth do massive old houses like this still exist? its definitely one of the strangest horror tropes to me that the dead relative is always in possession of a supernaturally large house. at least she had great taste in art. wasn't much for knots though...

this movie is about novelist Roger Cobb, reeling from his recent divorce, haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his young son, and struggling with his new book about his traumatic experiences in Vietnam. But when he moves into the strange house left to him by his late aunt, Roger's precarious sanity comes under siege by nightmares. and Vietnam flashbacks. and the Neighbors. and the closet.

god damn does this movie make you wait for the good stuff, and good stuff might be the wrong term for what this movie has to offer. its slow, the characters are shit, the acting is mediocre, its full of useless flashbacks, and the whole movie is about as fun as a saltine cracker. its bland to the extreme, only interesting in brief moments when they give the practical effects work a chance to shine. even with the fairly short run time, this movie feels like it could be knocked out in a single episode of goosebumps.

all of the practical effects here are amazing, but i'm not willing to dive into the septic tank of this movie to fish out its few worth while scenes. If you still want to watch this movie, do yourself a favor and skip ahead to the 30 minute mark at least. would hate for you to miss the musical body clean up montage.

to be fair this movie definitely gets a lot better in the back half.

zzzzzzzzz holy shit that looks amazing zzzzzzzzzzzz/10
