watching these movies is as close to hell as i plan on getting. out of all the HELLRAISER garbage i have sat through, i fully expected this one to be the worst in the series. luckily for you, i clockwork orange style forced myself to sit through this shit, so lets talk about the latest crime against my eyeballs HELLRAISER: DEADER.
apparently, all the cool goth kids in 2005's London have started a club to take part in the hottest new trend, bringing dead people back to life. instead of being about the cool goth kids though, this movie follows journalist Pigtails as she investigates the strange videotape of one of there latest suicide parties. To this movies credit, the snuff style videotape is quite well done, and it sets the perfectly disturbing tone every good HELLRAISER should have. the first crime seen she investigates has that same perfectly unsettling atmosphere, and the entire seen at the woman's apartment is the best scene of horror i have gotten from this series in way to long.
it was at this point i was kicking myself for shitting on this movie so much in my smart ass opening.
maybe its because of all the shitty movies i have had to sit through in this series, this movie really inst as bad as the 14% or rotten tomatoes suggests. i cant put my finger on who to credit, but its very obvious the team behind this movie understand not only how to create tension, but genuine fear. the atmosphere reminds me a lot of the movie SE7EN, and i am a huge fan of how nasty this movie gets with its production design. lots of urban decay, a super fun if unrealistic punk train, and plenty of creepy old buildings and massive underground tunnels that make this setting real fun to explore.
equally surprising is how well the plot manages to keep things interesting. as soon as one mystery is solved, several more take its place to keep this movie interesting. The first half of this movie is more investigating a mystery, and the back half is someone dealing with an American Werewolf style transformation into.... something else.
the characters may be flimsy, but this is easily the best HELLRAISER movie since 3. or maybe even 2.. don't have the strongest memory of 3.
8/10
