DON'T PANIC

On April 27th, 2021, i will be turning 21. And for the past few weeks, i have been saving this movie to review on my birthday. I was convinced that i would really enjoy it, and i assumed it would be a cheesy 80s horror movie that's perfectly terrible like sleep-away camp.

On his seventeenth birthday, Michael is given a present of a Ouija board by Tony his best friend. At a session, Tony using a medium known to him only as "Virgil", unwittingly unlocks the evil forces of the board. Soon there is a wave of violent killings and the chief suspect appears to be Michael. He has been witness to all the killings via premonitions and out of body experiences. Is Michael the killer? Can he prove his innocence or is someone else being possessed by the evil spirit...?

You know those old 80s commercials for Theme parks and what not, where everything is impossibly bright and everyone is impossibly happy with themselves? The ones with the equally plastic happy soundtrack taken form some massive audio library of royalty free Troom-Troom style tunes? Imagine that was a whole movie.

I love this movie. the acting is all mediocre, the audio is constantly clipping, the soundtrack sounds like an early 90s PC game, and at its core this movie is a horribly sappy and corny love story that is so over the top it ends up working quite well as a comedy. its pretty much about an idiotic weirdo, 17 year old that wears dinosaur pajamas while running around like a loon trying to stop some weirdo that likes to throw foam blocks about. Mix that with every mess of an event is just plot convenience after plot convenience in the best way possible. the only thing at all that makes this a horror movie is the hallucinations scenes that feel right out of NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, and considering just how little this movie focuses on horror I'm amazed the effects are as well done as they are. Its far less surprising knowing that Screaming Mad George is behind it all, and his inclusion in the projects only adds to the total weirdness.

i really cant fully describe why this movie works so well, it just... does
